Practice Health Check Corp. leadership has over 20+ years each of experience in infection prevention and control, microbiology, infectious diseases and environmental services management. Our leadership team ensures that the PHCC team of infection prevention and control consultants assist facilities, organizations, associations and other entities with developing, implementing and maintaining evidence-based infection prevention and control programs as well as providing exceptional educational programs to meet client needs.

Dr. Kevin Katz

Chief Medical Officer/Co-Founder

Dr. Kevin Katz is a Medical Microbiologist and Infectious Diseases specialist and a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Katz serves as the medical director of infection control at a community teaching hospital, Head of Microbiology at an acute care trauma centre and Medical Director of Ontario’s largest hospital microbiology lab. Dr Katz has served on provincial Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) best practices committees for many years and has co-authored many of the Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee best practices guidelines. He has special research interests in healthcare-acquired infections and patient safety.

Maja McGuire

Maja McGuire BSc MLT CIC is an infection Control expert with over 20 years of infection control experience in healthcare and private settings. Her career started as a Medical Technologist in Clinical Microbiology and then transitioned into infection control in healthcare settings. Maja has served as Director of hospital Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) and Occupational Health and Safety programs, was an infection control instructor through Centennial College and has served on numerous national and provincial IPAC groups including IPAC-Canada, IPAC-GTA, GOS and CSA.

Tony Nguyen

Chief Operating Officer

Tony is our Chief Operating Officer at Practice Health Check. With nearly 25 years of experience in the healthcare sector, Tony has held leadership roles in acute care hospitals, long-term care, and retirement facilities. He has extensive experience, and is an expert in environmental cleaning, laundry, waste management, call centre operations, and nutrition and food services. With a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification, Tony is a strong proponent of continuous quality improvement and service excellence. He has served on the OHHA board of directors and was also an instructor with Centennial College’s Healthcare Environmental Services Management program.

Talia is a CBIC certified Infection Control Practitioner and her background in Microbiology and Medical Science has provided an important foundation in the infection control industry. With over 25 years in the healthcare sector, Talia has experience in acute care, palliative care, rehab and the dental setting. She has strong leadership skills and has previously been a mentor for newly emerging ICP’s, through the Centennial College Infection Control Program.

Janessa McGuire

Janessa is a CBIC certified Infection Control Practitioner, practicing since 2011. In her tenure she has had the opportunity to serve in research and innovation, various acute care portfolios, construction and renovation, and most recently, non-acute care IPAC programming. Janessa’s expertise is with translating risk-based awareness to solution focused approaches responsive to the IPAC needs of varying client environments.

Our team of infection control consultants bring together a wealth of knowledge and experience in infection control, dental hygiene, quality improvement, occupational health, and environmental services leadership. Our team includes consultants certified (CIC) through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC), registered dental hygienists, a certified Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist (CCDIS) and certified environmental services leader.

Note: Our team is fully vaccinated and adheres to public health guidelines during travel and onsite. In addition, we are fully compliant with the policies of our clients during onsite visits, including screening prior to entering the facility, receiving a rapid test if required, use of well-fitting masks for source control or respirator masks (N95), and use of additional PPE if indicated.

Our Services

Organizations demonstrate widely variable knowledge and competence in infection prevention and control (IPAC) best practices, and education to staff in many settings has been largely delivered via virtual formats due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Practice Health Check provide customized and relevant education to staff in all settings, by reviewing the fundamentals of IPAC competencies with onsite facilitated teaching, demonstration and practice, and by offering the opportunity for staff to ask questions and demonstrate understanding. We customize this training according to staff roles, so as to best address the practical knowledge and skill gaps relevant to their roles.

Practice Health Check provides on-site IPAC and environmental services audits and recommendations to assess and prepare for Public Health, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development of Ontario inspections, and to improve staff, customer, client, resident and patient safety.
